Mosaic Art Vase: An Upcycled Restoration Project with Heart

A Gift From Mom

The vase was a Christmas gift from Mom, probably 25 years ago. I loved it and used it often, especially in the summer. It was perfect for displaying bunches of flowers. One day while washing it I hit it with a coffee mug and wham! That was it! A huge chunk broke off. And there was no getting around it, the repair was just plain ugly.

I couldn’t bring myself to toss it, so I sat it in the studio with all of the other broken glass, china, plates and mugs. For a mosaic artist, it is just another opportunity to create something. – someday:-)

Broken Vase

Another Rescue

A friend sent a shower door my way when she was remodeling her home this summer. The tempered glass from the door was just the inspiration I needed to break out the vase. I strengthened the crack with some E6000 and prepared the vase with a thin layer of Wellbond. I find it’s easier to work of glass when it’s prepared this way. As I added the glass pieces, I was careful to cover the crack as much as possible to further reinforce the bond.

The clear tempered glass worked perfectly with the gold bands already present. The rest of the design flowed from there.

The final piece is so colorful and really shines when there’s some backlighting. This project has been a perfect was to upcycle broken materials and restore a treasured gift.
